Why Hire The IT Guy?.
Before I officially launched this blog, the very first post I ever shared about my new business was focused on my why—the driving force behind starting Paul Grinold Site Services. But today, I want to tackle a different, equally important question: Why me?
If you search local community pages, you will find dozens of contractors out there with shiny new equipment, eager to take on your next project. Honestly, many of my competitors do a really good job.
But doing a truly exceptional job is about much more than just digging a ditch, removing a stump, sending an invoice, and getting paid. For me, it’s about providing real value and building long-lasting relationships with my customers.
I’ve spent years doing exactly this in the IT industry. As a lead Cloud Architect, I partner with various agencies to design complex infrastructure from the ground up. The core of that work isn't just about the technology; it’s about getting to know the customer, understanding their exact goals, and partnering with them to deliver that desired outcome. I bring that exact same outcome-driven mindset to site services. It’s about planning the work carefully and executing it precisely to meet your vision for your property.
But can the "IT guy" actually run the heavy machinery? Absolutely. The truth is, I’ve always been a hands-on guy. Growing up, money was tight, and if my car broke down, the only way it got fixed was if I turned the wrenches myself. I fondly remember rebuilding a clutch in the dead of winter in my dad’s unheated garage—long before you could just pull up a YouTube tutorial. You just had to figure it out, freeze your fingers, and get the job done.
That mechanical mindset carried over into my time in the Marine Corps, and it certainly didn't stop when I transitioned into the tech sector. During my first deployment to Iraq as a civilian for a tech company, I had to learn how to repair the diesel generators that powered our satellite earth terminals—systems absolutely vital for battlefield communications. I once took a helicopter ride out to one of the most dangerous outposts in Northern Iraq to tear apart and clean a generator that had been running for 10,000 hours straight without any maintenance. I didn't have to ask why the maintenance schedule had been ignored; the shrapnel lodged in the system and the fact that the outpost was under constant, heavy fire told the whole story. I Googled OP Corregidor for a for the thumb nail pic and this dirty room with the cots looks exactly like the room I stayed in when I took a night flight to that Ramadi outpost fix the generator.
That ability to troubleshoot under pressure, fix what's broken, and keep moving forward is exactly what I bring to the dirt world. For the past several years, I’ve spent countless hours running equipment right here on my own land—clearing space, managing drainage, and putting my machinery to work to shape the property.
When you hire Paul Grinold Site Services, LLC, you aren't just getting someone who knows how to pull levers on an excavator. You are getting a dedicated partner with the discipline to get the job done right, the mechanical grit to keep the site running smoothly no matter what happens, and the project management experience to ensure the final result is exactly what you wanted.
